A parasitic fly called New World screwworm has been found in the US. Pet owners and shelters need to be vigilant and take steps to prevent infestations, which can cause tissue damage and even death if left untreated.
On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first case of New World screwworm (NWS) in the United States.
The NWS is a parasitic blow fly whose larvae are known for their screw-like shape. Dr. Guilherme Verocai, an associate professor and director of the Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, says that the female fly lays eggs in open wounds, which hatch into larvae within 12 hours.
The adult fly thrives in warm climates, typically between 65 and 91 degrees Fahrenheit. It is strikingly metallic in color, with greens and blues and red eyes. This fly should not be confused with its 'first cousin', Cochliomyia macellaria, which is more common in the U.S. but harmless.
Female C. hominivorax will lay a couple hundred eggs around an existing wound, and within 12 hours, depending on the temperature, the eggs will hatch. This can result in an infestation that can escalate quickly and become severe as the small larvae eat and grow larger.
Screwworms can infest all warm-blooded animals, including dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, and even people. In endemic areas, cattle are most commonly affected, but dogs are usually the second most affected among domestic species.
