A study of Polish families living in Spain found that they face cultural identity challenges due to intergenerational conflicts. Researchers interviewed both parents and children about their experiences adapting to a new culture.
Emigration can be a difficult experience for many people. For Polish families moving to Spain, it's no different. A researcher from SWPS University studied the dynamics between children and their parents in these families.
The study found that parents want to maintain contact with their Polish roots, while young people try to develop their autonomy in their new home. This can lead to conflicts between generations. The researchers interviewed 44 individuals, including 23 young people aged 10-20 and 21 parents aged 30-55, mostly mothers.
The study used a method called template analysis to understand the experiences of these families. Visual methods were also used to help the young participants express their emotions. The findings showed that Polish families in Spain face similar challenges as those in Poland, including conflicts related to intergenerational differences and leisure activities.
