Topic: Biology

A team of scientists in China has created a computer program that can design special proteins to protect plants from diseases. They tested this new method on rice and found it worked well against certain viruses and bacteria.

Crop production faces threats from plant pathogens. Traditional disease-resistance breeding relies heavily on natural plant resistance genes that encode immune receptors adapted to particular pathogens.

However, these natural defenses are often overcome by rapidly evolving pathogens. To solve this problem, a team led by Professor Gao Caixia at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a programmable platform for designing synthetic plant immune receptors (SPIRs).

The researchers used AI-assisted protein tools to design new proteins that specifically bind pathogen proteins. They then integrated these designed proteins into the rice immune receptor Pikm-1, generating SPIRs with customized recognition specificities.

Using this pipeline, they designed 391 SPIRs, which targeted proteins from a broad range of plant pathogens. Of these, 71 (18.2%) recognized their intended targets and activated immune responses.

Why It Matters

This new technology can help protect crops from diseases, which is crucial for food security in India, where many people rely on agriculture for their livelihood.
