Scientists at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute in Spain have created a new algorithm to help understand how cells behave when they're infected or changing. This algorithm, called Cartesian Distance-Based Gene Expression (CDBGE), is more accurate than previous methods and can identify genes that are important for different cellular states.
When cells respond to an infection, inflammation, or a tumor, thousands of genes change their activity levels. Analyzing these changes helps researchers understand how cells adapt and function differently. However, previous methods often couldn't capture the full complexity of these processes, making it harder to understand what's happening.
To address this limitation, the research team developed CDBGE, which integrates multiple types of information to better understand cellular behavior. This new method was tested using data from human and mouse studies and showed that it can accurately classify samples and identify important gene expression markers across different biological systems.
