Asteroid Nysa May Be Three Worlds in One

Mayur Tembhare
  1. Nysa is an asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter.

  2. It has a surface rich in enstatite, a mineral that is rare on Earth.

  3. The team used two powerful telescopes: the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the Very Large Telescope in Chile.

  4. The images show two prominent valleys around Nysa's circumference, suggesting it may be a contact trinary.

Topic: Space

Scientists have taken high-quality images of asteroid Nysa using powerful telescopes. The images show two prominent valleys around its circumference, suggesting that it may be a contact trinary - three separate bodies stuck together.

Asteroids are small rocky objects that orbit the Sun. One such asteroid is (44) Nysa, which has been studied for over a hundred years. Until now, scientists didn't know what shape Nysa was. They thought it might be elongated or even two lumps stuck together.

To solve this mystery, an international team of scientists led by Kate Minker at Lowell Observatory used two powerful telescopes: the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the Very Large Telescope in Chile. These telescopes have special instruments called SHARK-VIS and SPHERE/ZIMPOL that can take high-quality images of distant objects.

The team's images show two prominent valleys around Nysa's circumference, which they think are necks - pinched joints where separate bodies have come to rest against each other. This would make Nysa the first contact trinary on record. Another possibility is that Nysa is a single body that has been severely battered and indented, giving it a three-lobed appearance.

The team also discovered a small moon orbiting Nysa, about 1 kilometer across. By tracking the moon's orbit, they were able to calculate Nysa's mass and density. This information can help scientists understand how Nysa was formed and what it is made of.

Why It Matters

Understanding asteroids like Nysa can help us learn more about the formation of our solar system. Asteroids are also potential sources of valuable resources, such as water and metals, which could be used to support future space missions.
